Tim Dixon was invited to present his recent work on low carbon cities at the launch of the Work Foundation’s report on ‘Low Carbon Jobs in Cities’ on 19 July in London.
The UK’s low carbon and environmental market is already worth £112 billion, 3 per cent of the global total, and employs around 900,000 people. But this is an international opportunity that is going to grow substantially over the coming decade and beyond, and the UK is falling behind its competitors in the ‘race’ to secure these new sources of growth and jobs. Bringing together city level actions and visions around a focus on carbon reductions in cities and ‘green growth’ is therefore vital for us to move to a more sustainable future by 2050.
Following Nye Cominetti’s (Work Foundation) presentation on the low carbon jobs report, Tim’s presentation highlighted his work on low carbon cities (RICS) and retrofit (EPSRC Retrofit 2050), with other presentations from Hanna Thomas (East London Green Jobs Alliance) and Nisha Makan (Cities Policy Unit, Cabinet Office).
The workshop event was attended by representatives from national government (including HM Treasury and BIS), local authorities, academia and NGOs.
